Predictive Maintenance PdM Prevents Shutdowns

Predictive Maintenance PdM is the next logical step beyond preventive maintenance for a proactive approach to maintenance execution.

Predictive Maintenance PdM is the next logical step beyond preventive maintenance for a proactive approach to maintenance execution. PdM is often synonymous with Condition Based Maintenance. This practice is the starting point for the digital transformation of your factory and the cornerstone of the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things).

Preventive Maintenance PM Vs Predictive Maintenance PdM

Preventive maintenance is scheduled regularly regardless of whether or not the maintenance activity is currently necessary. It is designed to keep operations running smoothly but does not factor in the actual state of the part or process.

Predictive maintenance, on the other hand, is performed as needed, using real-time collection and analysis of machine operation data to identify and handle issues before a failure occurs. PdM addresses an actual developing problem before it can interrupt production. This allows for repairs to be made while the machine is still operating, or if a shutdown is necessary, it is for a shorter time and with a definitive plan of action.

Why Predictive Is Better Than Preventive

There are three primary reasons that predictive maintenance PdM is preferable over preventive maintenance to permanently address failures or failure modes:

  • The result is always a dot on a chart that can start a trend to follow.
  • The result is always an objectively agreed upon value (everyone can see the thermometer reading).
  • The predictive action is taken while the machine is running and producing product.

These should be all the reasons you need to convince leadership to support a predictive maintenance effort.
